This is a set of seven simple principles that act like a magic wand you can wave to shape your career, your reach and your relationships–and, once mastered, it will elevate every aspect of your life.

PRINCIPLE #1

‘KNOWING WHO’S NEGOTIATING’

There are only three scenarios when it comes to the parties involved in a negotiation and your relationship to them. In order to consistently succeed in negotiation, you MUST understand which scenario you are operating in.

PRINCIPLE #2

‘UNDERSTANDING NEEDS AND DESIRES’

This principle is based on the idea of always understanding what both your side’s needs and desires are as well as the other side’s needs and desires are within any negotiation.

PRINCIPLE #3

‘DECIDING TO NEGOTIATE (OR NOT)’

The idea of negotiating or not negotiating can be activated before or during any negotiation. That’s why the principal is third. If it is determined that an active negotiation should be paused, there is always an opportunity to resume the negotiation as long as your side remains aware of who you are negotiating with and what they need and desire.

PRINCIPLE #4

‘KNOWING THE FOUR NEGOTIATION APPROACHES’

This principle is based on one’s decision has been made to negotiate staying aware of one’s approach in the negotiation. There are four approaches in every negotiation. The Four Negotiation Approaches are: Dominance, Acquiescence, Compromise, and Synergy.

PRINCIPLE #5

‘APPLYING THE LEVER LAW’

Determining exactly what lever or negotiation tools to use that will ensure the likelihood of the greatest number of your needs and desires being met in the negotiation. The Five Grand Levers are Community, Independence, Held-Power, Alliance, and Time. 

PRINCIPLE #6

‘SETTING CLEAR DEAL POINTS’

The main idea behind principle number six is about setting clear goals as part of your negotiation process. The reason for this is to make sure that emotions don’t enter into the equation much if at all. If you know exactly what you’re trying to achieve for your side it makes it much easier to see progress and to remain patient against your opponent.

‘NEGOTIATING LIKE A LEADER’

The seven leadership-based negotiation must dues are fairly self-explanatory however it’s important to realize that negotiation is about more than achieving a transaction.
